Record StripchatVR with CaptureGem

Table of Contents

StripchatVR is CaptureGem’s built-in site for Stripchat VR (vr.stripchat.com). It records public VR shows from the desktop app on Windows, macOS and Linux, on both Free and Premium, and saves the model’s original VR stream without converting it, so it’s also the best-quality way to record a public VR show.

Before you start

Download CaptureGem for Windows, macOS or Linux and open the desktop app. Use the latest version, and choose an output folder in Settings before your first recording.

What to paste or type

Use the model’s VR room link, for example https://vr.stripchat.com/cam/model_username, or just the username. A model’s VR username is the same as their regular Stripchat username: it’s the last part of the room link. The model has to be broadcasting in VR; for ordinary shows, follow the Stripchat guide instead.

Add the stream

  1. Open the Record tab in CaptureGem.
  2. In the Add Stream panel, set Select Website to StripchatVR first.
  3. Type the username, or paste the VR room link, into Enter URL or Username. Stripchat and StripchatVR share web addresses, so a link pasted while another site is selected switches to regular Stripchat, which records the flat (non-VR) stream. Check that StripchatVR is still selected.
  4. Leave Monitor Only switched off. With it on, CaptureGem only watches the stream and doesn’t save a video.
  5. Click Add Stream.

What the status means

If the model is in a public VR show when you add them, the row changes to Recording right away; keep CaptureGem open while it records in the background. This method records public shows only, so a room that is offline or in a private show won’t produce a video until the public VR broadcast is back.

Free version or Premium

On the free version, each recording is saved for up to 5 minutes and you can add up to 10 models. Recording only starts if the model is live when you add or start them, so if they were offline, start the recording again once they’re back. Premium removes both limits and adds auto-record: select the model on the Record tab, open Modify Auto Record under Actions and choose Record Always. From then on CaptureGem records whenever the model comes online and starts again after a disconnect. Turning on Auto Record All Newly Added Models in Settings does the same for every model you add later. Live previews of everything that’s recording are on the Monitor tab.

Where the recording goes

After a recording stops, CaptureGem converts it into a video file, which can take a while for a long session. The Review tab lets you play, trim, tag or delete it, and Open Video Folder on the Record tab opens the folder that holds your files. Recordings are MP4 files by default. With Premium, each file runs up to 60 minutes by default and auto-record continues straight into the next one. The save folder, the file length (Cap Video Segments at Duration (Minutes)) and the container format are all in Settings; the settings overview on capturegem.com explains each option.

Playing the VR file

VR recordings are side-by-side MP4 files whose names end in _F120_LR: a 120-degree fisheye picture with the left-eye and right-eye views next to each other. Any VR video app that can open files from your computer will play them. In HereSphere (available on Steam), open the advanced settings, choose Fisheye and side-by-side (SBS), set the field of view to 120 degrees, and set the aspect ratio to auto so the picture isn’t stretched. For general player advice, see playing CaptureGem VR recordings and choosing a VR player.

StripchatVR notes and troubleshooting

  • The recording is flat instead of VR: the model was added as Stripchat. Add them again with StripchatVR selected, and remove the Stripchat entry if you don’t want flat recordings.
  • Check the model is in VR: open https://vr.stripchat.com/cam/model_username with their username to confirm a public VR show is on.
  • VR private shows: a private show you start from your VR headset can be recorded with Premium’s Proxy feature in Google Chrome on your computer, signed in to the same Stripchat account. It records the video Chrome plays, which can be lower quality than the original stream, so use it for private shows only; the full StripchatVR guide walks through it.
  • Non-VR shows: use regular Stripchat for those.
  • Stripchat blocked on your network: the Stripchat guide lists the settings that help.

More help

If a recording keeps failing, update CaptureGem, check that the stream plays in your browser, and ask in the CaptureGem Discord. Premium members can also send a failed recording to support.
